Abstract

This study analyzes the translation of denotative and connotative meanings in the Indonesian protest song "Tikus-Tikus Kantor" by Iwan Fals into English, utilizing three machine translation tools there are Google Translate, DeepL, and U-Dictionary. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research applies Peter Newmark's semantic translation theory and Geoffrey Leech's semantic meaning framework to identify and interpret both literal (denotative) and figurative (connotative) meanings. The findings highlight that many lyrics in the song carry strong connotative meanings related to political criticism, corruption, and bureaucracy. Literal translations often fail to convey the deeper cultural and emotional context of the lyrics, resulting in potential misinterpretations. Therefore, the study emphasizes the importance of understanding cultural nuances and connotations in translation to preserve the intended message and impact of the original text.
