Abstract

Anxiety is a psychological problem often experienced by patients with chronic diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Excessive anxiety can worsen physical and mental conditions and negatively impact the effectiveness of therapy. This application aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Slow Deep Breathing Exercise therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention in reducing anxiety levels in DM patients. The application method used is Evidence Based Practice with a pre-test and post-test design without a control group. The instrument used in measuring anxiety levels is the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS). The intervention was carried out for three consecutive days with a frequency of 1–2 times a day for 5 minutes. The results showed a significant decrease in the HAS score, from 27 (moderate category) to 10 (mild category) after therapy. In addition, there was an improvement in nursing outcome indicators such as sleep patterns, restless behavior, verbalization of worries, and tense behavior based on the Indonesian Nursing Outcome Standards (SLKI). This therapy is considered effective and can be applied as an independent nursing intervention. The application of the Slow Deep Breathing Exercise technique has been shown to improve the psychological comfort of DM patients, lower blood pressure and pulse rate, and help patients achieve a relaxed state. This intervention also has the potential to be used as an educational approach that can be taught to patients to carry out independently to manage everyday anxiety.
