Abstract
Muhammad Shahrur is one of the most controversial contemporary Islamic thinkers due to his rational and scientific approach in interpreting the Qur’an. He developed the concept of limits (hudûd) in Islamic legal interpretation and applied modern linguistic methods such as structuralist and semiotic approaches. This paper aims to analyze Shahrur’s methodology in Qur'anic exegesis, especially on legal and social issues, and to evaluate its relevance in contemporary contexts. This research employs a qualitative library research method. The findings show that Shahrur’s approach opens new spaces for ijtihad but also sparks controversy in modern Islamic discourse. Modern and contemporary Islamic thinking must truly contribute that is able to solve various problems in the midst of the onslaught of modernity. The interpretation in classical Islamic literature is not a final matter, therefore contemporary issues related to the marginalization of women are one of Syahrur's concerns. Syahrur as a contemporary Muslim thinker when studying religious texts tries to give a different interpretation and is contrary to the interpretation of ulama (mufassir) in general. Syahrur's reading is related to the problem of polygamy in reviewing the verses of the Qur'an using a philosophical approach to language, in the sense that he examines in depth the key words contained in each topic, both through a paradigmatic and syntagmatic approach.
