Abstract

Indonesia is the world's largest producer of crude palm oil (CPO) and a major exporter in the global market. Some of Indonesia's main CPO export destinations include India, China, the European Union, the United States, and Pakistan. CPO is Indonesia's leading export commodity that plays an important role in international trade, especially with China as one of its main partners. This article discusses the potential and barriers faced by Indonesia in expanding its CPO market to China. Amidst the increasing demand for CPO in China's industrial and energy sectors, Indonesia has a great opportunity to strengthen its exports. However, there are also a number of challenges such as pressure from environmental issues, strict import policies, and competition from other producing countries. Based on a review of global trade data and policies, this article offers some strategic steps that can be taken by the government and industry players to maintain and improve the competitiveness of Indonesian CPO in the Chinese market.
