Abstract
This study analyzes the influence of economic growth rate (EGR) and population size on the Human Development Index (HDI) in North Sumatra Province from 2009-2024 using multiple linear regression analysis. Secondary data from the North Sumatra BPS (Central Bureau of Statistics) were used. The results show that population size has a positive and significant effect on HDI (t-statistic = 20.45946, p<0.05), while EGR does not have a significant effect (t-statistic = -1.312548, p>0.05). The R-squared value of 0.9806 indicates that 98.06% of the variation in HDI is explained by the two variables. These findings suggest that improvements in HDI in North Sumatra are more influenced by population size than EGR, highlighting the importance of policies focused on improving human resource quality and equitable development. Further research is needed to investigate other factors mediating the relationship between EGR and HDI.
