Abstract

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder among the elderly, which leads to decreased quality of life, increased risk of chronic disease, and psychological disturbances. Elderly exercise, as a non-pharmacological intervention, has been proven to improve sleep quality by stimulating relaxation and balancing the nervous system. This study applied a descriptive case study design with an observational approach. The subjects were elderly individuals with insomnia at UPT PSTW Bondowoso. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and evaluation using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) before and after the implementation of elderly exercise based on the standard operating procedure (SOP). The objective was to determine the effect of elderly exercise on improving sleep quality in elderly individuals with insomnia. After three consecutive days of implementing elderly exercise, the results showed a decrease in ISI scores from moderate to mild insomnia, improved sleep comfort, and reduced symptoms of sleep difficulty. These findings indicate that elderly exercise can enhance sleep quality and reduce sleep disturbances among the elderly. Elderly exercise has proven to be an effective non-pharmacological intervention for improving sleep quality in older adults with insomnia. This structured physical activity helps reduce muscle tension, improve blood circulation, and stimulate the production of sleep-related hormones such as melatonin. The findings of this case study support the use of elderly exercise as an alternative therapy that is affordable, safe, and easy to implement in social service settings such as UPT PSTW.
