PELINDUNGAN GARAM GROBOGAN SEBAGAI INDIKASI GEOGRAFIS DAN TANTANGANNYA DI MASA MENDATANG DITINJAU BERDASARKAN UNDANG-UNDANG NOMOR 20 TAHUN 2016 TENTANG MEREK DAN INDIKASI GEOGRAFIS

Abstract

Garam Grobogan is a local Indonesian product that recently has been legally protected as a Geographical Indication (GI) under Law Number 20 of 2016 on Trademarks and Geographical Indications. Originating from natural saltwater springs in Grobogan Regency, Central Java, this salt is produced using traditional techniques passed down through generations. This study aims to analyze the eligibility of Garam Grobogan as a GI product and to identify challenges and strategies for sustaining its legal protection in the future. The method used is normative juridical with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected through literature review and direct interviews with salt producers in Jono Village. The findings indicate that Garam Grobogan generally meets the GI criteria in terms of unique characteristics, consistent quality, strong reputation, and geographical factors (both natural and human). However, several obstacles persist, including declining regeneration of salt farmers, non-compliance with national standards (SNI), weak institutional management, and limited market competitiveness. This study recommends various strategies such as establishing a local GI management body, implementing quality control systems, diversifying products, educating younger generations, and expanding market promotion. GI protection must not be seen as a mere legal status but as an ongoing effort to preserve cultural values, ensure product quality, and improve local community welfare.
