Abstract
Background: The aging process leads to a decline in various body systems, including the musculoskeletal system. Elderly individuals with gout arthritis are prone to joint pain due to uric acid crystal buildup, which interferes with daily activities and lowers quality of life. Non-pharmacological therapy such as warm ginger compress is considered a safe alternative due to ginger’s natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic compounds. Objective: To describe the implementation of warm ginger compress as an effort to reduce pain intensity in elderly patients with gout arthritis. Method: This study used a descriptive case study design involving Mrs. S, an elderly woman experiencing severe joint pain in her foot due to gout arthritis. The intervention was carried out for three consecutive days, twice daily, for 15–20 minutes using boiled ginger water. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Result: On the first day, the pain scale was 7 (severe pain), reduced to 5 (moderate pain) on the second day, and further decreased to 3 (mild pain) on the third day. This showed a gradual reduction in pain intensity following the application of the warm ginger compress. Discussion: Warm ginger compress provides a warming effect, promotes vasodilation, improves blood circulation, and reduces pain-inducing substances such as prostaglandins. Active compounds in ginger, such as gingerol and shogaol, also contribute to the anti-inflammatory process, effectively lowering pain intensity. Conclusion: Warm ginger compress is effective as a non-pharmacological therapy in gradually reducing pain intensity in elderly patients with gout arthritis over three days.
