Abstract

This study aims to analyze the understanding level of 11th-grade students from class XI-5 at SMA Negeri 11 Medan regarding the chemistry topic of hydrocarbon compound nomenclature. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 34 students, utilizing a concept mastery test and questionnaire as instruments. The analysis revealed that most students had a good grasp of basic hydrocarbon concepts such as alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes, with the highest score range between 80–90%. However, understanding of the isomerism concept remained low, with an average mastery of only 20%. Incorrect answers were mostly due to shallow understanding, random guessing, as well as ineffective explanations or inadequate learning sources. These findings highlight the importance of implementing constructivist-based learning approaches to help students develop a deeper conceptual understanding.
