Abstract

Substance abuse is one of the most pressing social and health issues in Indonesia. One of the government’s efforts to address this problem is through social rehabilitation at institutions known as IPWL (Institutions for Mandatory Reporting Recipients). This study aims to describe the role of addiction counselors in the rehabilitation process at IPWL MARI INDONESIA BERSINAR, Medan. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews with an active counselor. The findings show that counselors play a broader role beyond weekly sessions: they act as emotional companions, recovery facilitators, and liaisons between clients, families, and medical professionals. The approach used is individual, collaborative, and includes post-rehabilitation support. The findings are analyzed through Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory, which emphasizes the importance of supporting individuals through identity crises and social reintegration. This study highlights the strategic role of counselors in promoting holistic client recovery.
