Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a disease that affects the kidney organ where the condition of the kidney organ decreases progressively, chronically, or persistently and lasts more than 3 months. Patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease who undergo hemodialysis often experience fatigue, which has an impact on increasing morbidity and mortality. Fatigue can be overcome by the application of massage therapy, especially foot massage. This study aims to apply foot massage as an Evidence Based Practice (EBP) based nursing intervention in hemodialysis patients who experience fatigue. The design used was a case study of two CKD patients on HD in the Hemodialysis room of Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province. The foot massage intervention was performed twice a week, 10 minutes after hemodialysis with a duration of 20 minutes each session. Inclusion criteria were no fractures or wounds to the extremities, willing to do foot massage and exclusion criteria were fractures or wounds to the feet, grade 3 edema and patients with HD access in the lower extremities. Assessment of fatigue using the FACIT-Fatigue Scale questionnaire. The results showed a decrease in fatigue levels from moderate to mild categories in both patients (Score increased from 22 to 30 and the second patient scored 23 to 31). The application of foot massage is proven to help reduce fatigue and can be used as an independent nursing intervention in fatigue management in hemodialysis patients.
