Abstract

Pedada leaves (Sonneratia caseolaris) are known to contain various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins that exhibit potential as natural antimicrobial agents. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of pedada leaf extract against microorganisms found in the Musi River water, specifically in the Ampera Bridge region, South Sumatra. The research method employed the disk diffusion technique using three extract concentrations (25%, 50%, and 100%). River water samples were cultured on Nutrient Agar, treated with disks soaked in the extract, and incubated for 24 hours at room temperature. The results showed varying inhibition zones across concentrations, with the largest zone observed at 100%. In conclusion, pedada leaf extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against river water microorganisms and shows potential for development as a natural antibacterial agent. This study serves as a foundation for utilizing mangrove plants in environmental health and water treatment efforts.
