Abstract

The speech act of complaining is an utterance that contains a specific intention and meaning that is uttered by the speaker to the interlocutor. Speech acts are part of pragmatics as a discipline to study how language is used in the communication process according to its context. Many ways can be used to convey the utterance. One of them is through song lyrics. Song lyrics are used by songwriters to convey a certain message they want to convey to their listeners. The song lyrics used in this study are Denny Caknan's song lyrics. Denny Caknan is one of the singers and songwriters with the famous Javanese koplo song genre. Each of his works has successfully entered the YouTube trending. Coupled with his pleasant-sounding songs, everyone will definitely like them. Related to the speech act in this study chose the speech act of complaining in Denny Caknan's song lyrics, because Javanese songs are famous for the themes of heartbreak, infatuation and so on. However, in this study the speech act of complaining is not only limited to one theme. Instead, all themes in Denny Caknan's songs will be studied regarding the speech act of complaining. The purpose of this study is (1) to explain the form of complaining speech acts in Denny Caknan's song lyrics; and (2) to explain the complaining strategy according to Trosborg (1995). The research method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this study are the forms of direct literal complaining speech acts, direct non-literal complaining speech acts, indirect literal complaining speech acts, and indirect non-literal complaining speech acts. The most dominant form of complaining speech acts used in Denny Caknan's song lyrics is the direct literal speech act. There are Trosborg's (1995) complaining strategies found in Denny Caknan's song lyrics, namely the strategy of complaining without reprimand with the sub-category of instructions, the strategy of complaining with the expression of criticism with the sub-category of annoyance, painful consequences, the strategy of complaining with accusations with the sub-category of direct accusations, the strategy of complaining with the sub-category of disguised blame and explicit blame (attitude). The most dominant complaining strategy used in Denny Caknan's song lyrics is the speech act of no explicit reprimand with the sub-category of instructions and the strategy of complaining with the sub-category of painful consequences.
