Abstract
This study explores the campaign strategies employed by the Aliansi Kawal Demokrasi Pilkada Pati (AKDPP) in supporting the "empty box" option during the 2017 regional election (Pilkada) in Pati Regency. This election was unique in that it featured only one candidate pair, Haryanto-Saiful Arifin, running against the empty box. The emergence of the empty box campaign was a form of protest against the uncontested candidacy and highlighted a significant democratic dynamic, particularly in Pati District, which recorded the highest number of empty box votes in Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research collected data through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that AKDPP effectively utilized various campaign strategies, including mass mobilization, social and mass media engagement, and grassroots fundraising, to raise public awareness and promote the empty box as a legitimate democratic alternative. This study is analyzed through the lens of campaign strategy theory and the political rights to vote and be elected. The results emphasize the critical role of citizen participation in safeguarding democratic processes, especially in elections with only a single candidate.
