Abstract
Glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure. Timolol is a beta-blocker drug that is often used in the form of eye drops to reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients. Although effective in controlling glaucoma, the use of timolol can cause side effects, one of which is dry eyes. This study aims to determine the effect of using timolol eye drops on dry eye complaints. Observational study with a cross-sectional design with data collection through consecutive sampling. The sample in this study was 88 samples at RSI Sultan Agung Semarang and was conducted in January 2025. Glaucoma patients were distinguished as users of timolol eye drops ≥ 3 months and users of timolol eye drops < 3 months. Data collection used medical records. Identification of Dry Eyes was carried out with the DEQ -5 Test and was distinguished as dry eyes (DEQ-5 results> 6) and normal (DEQ-5 results 4-6). Data were analyzed using the chi square test. The results of the study of timolol maleate eye drops ≥3 months had dry eye complaints with the DEQ 5 (4-6) questionnaire as many as 34 patients (75.6%) from 88 samples. The chi square test obtained a p-value of 0.001 indicating that there was an effect of the use of timolol eye drops on dry eye complaints. The RP value = 2.707 which indicates that the use of timolol maleate eye drops has a 2.707 times greater risk of dry eye complaints. The use of timolol eye drops has an effect on dry eye complaints in patients at the Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital.
