Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental phase characterized by significant emotional, social, and psychological changes. During this stage, adolescents begin to form their identities, explore social relationships, and experience pressure from their environment. One of the common issues that arise during adolescence is aggressive behavior, which can manifest in both verbal and physical aggression. Aggressive behavior can have negative impacts on both individuals and their social environment, including increased interpersonal conflicts, decreased academic performance, and psychological disorders. One of the factors influencing the emergence of aggressive behavior in adolescents is the parenting style applied by parents. Authoritarian parenting, characterized by strict control, harsh punishment, and minimal communication and emotional warmth, can increase the tendency toward aggression in adolescents. Parents who adopt this parenting style often do not provide space for their children to express their opinions, which can lead to frustration and aggressive behavior as an emotional outlet. This study aims to determine the relationship between authoritarian parenting and aggressive behavior in adolescents at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta. The research method used is quantitative with a correlational design and a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 79 students from grades X and XI, selected using a random sampling technique. Data were collected using the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) to measure authoritarian parenting and the Buss Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) to assess aggressive behavior. Data analysis was conducted using the Kendall Tau correlation test. The results showed a significant relationship between authoritarian parenting and aggressive behavior in adolescents, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) and r = 0.403. The conclusion of this study is that the higher the level of authoritarian parenting, the higher the tendency for aggressive behavior in adolescents. Therefore, parents are encouraged to reduce the application of authoritarian parenting and prioritize open communication, empathy, and emotional closeness in guiding their children.
