Abstract

The aim of this research is to measure the depth of understanding among sixth-semester students in the Mandarin Language Education Program at Ma Chung University regarding the use of directional complements, known in Mandarin as 趋向补语 (qūxiàng bǔyǔ). These complements are crucial grammatical structures that indicate the direction of motion in a sentence and involve the correct application of compound elements such as (lái) and (qù). This study utilizes a descriptive quantitative approach by applying total sampling to all 10 students in the sixth semester. Data were collected through a written test consisting of 40 items distributed across four grammatical categories: 上来/上去 (shànglái/shàngqù), 下来/下去 (xiàlái/xiàqù), 进来/进去 (jìnlái/jìnqù), and 出来/出去 (chūlái/chūqù). The findings indicate varying levels of comprehension across the four categories, with the highest accuracy found in 下来/下去 (xiàlái/xiàqù) (59% correct) and the lowest in 进来/ (jìnlái/jìnqù) (48% correct). In addition, the Friedman test revealed a chi-square score of 300.000 and a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a notable variation in comprehension across the four categories. The results suggest the need for targeted instructional strategies to address specific weaknesses in student comprehension of directional complements.
