Abstract
In this study, the authority of men and women in Islam will be discussed using Abdullah Saeed's contextual interpretation approach to QS. An-Nisa 4:34. This verse has often been the subject of debate regarding the understanding of the husband's authority over the wife, including the interpretation of the word qawwāmūn, which is often translated as "leader" or "protector." Abdullah Saeed, in his book Interpreting the Qur'an: Towards a Contemporary Approach, offers a different perspective on interpreting this verse by emphasizing the importance of historical and social context in understanding the Qur'anic texts. This research aims to provide a clearer understanding of the concept of authority in the husband-wife relationship that is in line with the context of the present time.
