Abstract

Bullying remains a serious issue that frequently encountered in educational institutions across Indonesia. Bullying among high school students often occurs as a result of the internal dynamics of adolescents who are undergoing a critical phase of social development. One such dynamic is conformity behavior, which refers to the tendency to align with the beliefs and actions of a group in order to gain acceptance and avoid social rejection. On the other hand, bullying can potentially be prevented through self-control, which enables students to think critically and respond appropriately in various situations and conditions. Students with a high level of conformity are more vulnerable to engaging in bullying due to peer pressure. When this is accompanied by low self-control, they tend to struggle in resisting impulses to participate in bullying behavior that is endorsed by their peer group. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between conformity and self-control in high school students committing bullying. This research adopts a non-experimental quantitative method using purposive and convenience sampling techniques. The study sample consisted of 100 participants who were both male and female high school students, aged between 15-18 years, being part of their school peer groups and are currently or have previously engaged in bullying behavior since their entry into high school. Data collection utilized the Conformity Scale and the Indonesian version of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS). The collected data is analyzed using the Spearman’s Correlations method. The correlation test results indicate an r = −0.627, p < 0.005 demonstrating a significant negative correlation between conformity and self-control. This results suggests that the higher the level of conformity among high school students who commited bullying, the lower their self-control and vice versa.
