THE EFFECT OF DRUG INFORMATION SERVICES ON ANTIBIOTIC ADHERENCE AMONG OUTPATIENT PNEUMONIA PATIENTS AT SINJAI REGIONAL GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Antibiotic resistance is a serious threat to public health. One of the main causes of resistance is non-adherence to appropriate antibiotic use. Drug Information Services (DIS) provided by pharmacists are an effort to improve patient adherence.

Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between patient characteristics and adherence, and to analyze the effect of DIS on antibiotic adherence among outpatient pneumonia patients at Sinjai Regional General Hospital.

Methods: This quantitative study used a static group comparison design with the MARS-5 questionnaire as an instrument. Analysis was conducted using Paired T-Test and Chi-Square Test.

Results: There was a significant increase in adherence after the provision of DIS (p<0.05). Age and education were also associated with patient adherence.

Conclusion: Drug Information Services are effective in increasing antibiotic adherence in outpatient pneumonia patients. Patient age and education level are factors influencing adherence.
