Abstract
Hypertension is a chronic condition that requires long-term treatment and a high level of patient adherence. Non-adherence to medication can lead to serious complications such as stroke and kidney failure. One of the key factors influencing treatment adherence is family support, which includes emotional, informational, instrumental, and appraisal support. This study aims to describe the role of family support in improving medication adherence among hypertensive patients at Abu Sa’ad Clinic in Gumukmas, Jember. The study employed a descriptive case study design using direct observation, interviews, and health education provided to the patient and their family. Observations were conducted over three consecutive days involving a hypertensive patient and their closest accompanying family member. The results showed an improvement in the patient’s adherence to medication after receiving family support. On the first day, the patient was non-adherent due to a lack of reminders. On the second day, the patient began adhering after being reminded by a family member. By the third day, the patient adhered independently, indicating increased awareness influenced by consistent emotional, practical, and informational support from the family. These findings suggest that active family involvement plays a significant role in shaping patients’ medication adherence behavior. Therefore, healthcare professionals are encouraged to involve family members in every nursing intervention and to provide ongoing education to support the long-term success of hypertension treatment.
