Abstract

Islam is a very good religion in regulating all aspects and procedures of life. There are many reasons why Islam makes various things in this world useful and nothing is in vain. The concept of isti'mar in the Qur'an refers to Allah's command to humans to make the earth fertile as part of their responsibilities as caliphs. The verses of isti'mar emphasize that humans have an obligation to build, maintain the balance of nature, and prevent damage. This study aims to analyze the verses of isti'mar in the Qur'an and review the interpretations of classical commentators such as Al-Thabari, Ibn Kathir, and Al-Qurtubi. The method used in this study is qualitative with a thematic interpretation approach. The findings of this study indicate that isti'mar includes development both physically and morally, and demands a balance between exploitation and preservation. Therefore, understanding the concept of isti'mar can contribute to the development of sustainable Islamic civilization.
